Don’t be afraid: Robots are not so apocalyptic🤖
By: Nancy Salazar
For some time now, the media has been sharing articles or opinions about how robots have been “taking over” activities that humans used to do. In addition, they say that in the future, robots will replace humans in different jobs, mainly in repetitive processes that can sometimes be done much better by a robot than by a person as such.
And I say, they are not wrong and they are not far from reality.
However, there are authors who are in charge of spreading the arrival of robots as something negative, giving the robots the antagonistic role of the film and highlighting the “bad” of their intervention in our working world. That kind of plot is good for a science fiction book, but for real life it applies differently and it is not bad as it is presented to us.
When I read this kind of articles, they tell us about apocalyptic landscapes where the human being is discarded. But if we use our brain, we will realize that, the reason why robots substitute us in certain activities is so that the human being can unleash his creativity in other tasks, creativity that until today is something that robots are lacking.
Such is the case of the futuristic restaurant in Shanghai called “Robot.he”, where robots have replaced the waiters, giving them the opportunity to do other activities.
How does it work? You order through an application, inside the restaurant there is a runway where the robots circulate, you just have to wait for the robot to arrive at your table, open the transparent lid and take your plate. The increase in service efficiency and cost reduction is part of the company’s objectives and it is thanks to these types of innovations that they are fulfilling them.
Another example is the case of the Mexican company “Roomie IT”, who has created the “Roomie Bot COVID19”, a humanoid robot that works as an adaptable solution to the problems in Mexico regarding the COVID.
Among its features are the establishment of conversations with humans to make a survey of the main symptoms, measuring body temperature through a thermal camera, resulting in the identification of possible infected. Roomie Bot COVID19 is used as the first filter for this pandemic situation we are experiencing and is an excellent tool for Mexico and the rest of the world.
There are many other advantages that robots bring to us thanks to their helpful intervention in human repetitive or dangerous work. Such as increasing production, having greater accuracy in certain activities, 24 / 7 non stop work, reducing and saving time, among others.
That is why I invite you to reflect and think in a techno-optimist way when you read an article with an apocalyptic headline related to robots. Don’t be afraid: robots are not so apocalyptic.
See you in the future.🖖🏻👽
